あまのはごろも The Angel’s Robe

Once upon a time in a small village by the sea, a young man lived with his mother.

One day after fishing, he was walking through a pine grove and found a beautiful, almost-transparent robe hung over a pine branch.

“ What in the world is it ?
It’s certainly lovely.”

He said and put it in his bosom.

Just then, some one’s voice reached his ears from behind the grove of trees.

The man looked carefully toward the voice and saw several beautiful women were bathing.

“ How beautiful they are!
They must be from another world.”

He couldn’t take his eyes off them, as they finished bathing and walked to the pine branches where they had left their robes one by one.

Each woman put on her robe and flew up to the sky except for one woman who couldn’t find her robe.

“ I’m sure I hung my robe here.
Where has it gone? Without my robe I won’t be able to fly back to heaven. What can I do?”

She said in a panic.

The man walked up to her and in a cool voice said to her.

“ Hello, miss, what’s wrong?
You look cold with no clothes on.
Please, put this on”

He put his own kimono on her and asked.

“ Now tell what happened.
Where did you come from?”

But the woman said nothing.

“ If you have no place to stay, come to my house.”
said the man.

So he took the woman to his house and said to his mother.

“ Mom, this lady seems to have no
  home.
We can let her stay here, can’t we?”

“ We certainly can.
 My, isn’t she beautiful!”

His mother said and welcomed the woman into her home.

The man quickly hid the woman’s robe in the back of the closet.

Thereafter, the man and woman lived like husband and wife, and he enjoyed his new life with her.

He worked hard for his beautiful wife, and the wife helped him on the farm with house work.

Soon they had a cute baby boy, which made their life even happier.

When the man came back from fishing, his wife was standing in front of the house wearing her robe.

“You were hiding this robe from me.
Now that I’ve got it back,
I must go back to heaven.

I can not live with you and our boy
 any more.”
She said sadly.

“ I’m so sorry, dear.

I was so afraid of losing you,
I just couldn’t tell you the truth.

 Please,please stay with us.”

However, the wife said to him quietly,
“ I wish I could live here forever, too,
but I must go back now that I have
 this robe back.”

And with that, she flew up into the sky.

               The end

The Star Festival Japanese
(Tanabata たなばた)

Amanogawa is a countless collectives of stars that lies in the night sky, also known as Milky Way or the galaxy.

Please look up the Milky Way and try looking for a big triangle of stars in summer night.

This story is about two stars of the triangle; one is called Vega ( Orihime,Syokujo-sei) and the other called Altair (Hikoboshi, Kengyu-sei).

Long, long ago, the Lord of Heaven had a beautiful daughter who was a skillful weaver.

The brightly colored cloth she wove was so beautiful that everyone praised her for her work.

She was so fond of weaving that she spent every day at her loom.

When she was old enough to get married, God, her father, looked for a suitable young man; young, handsome and worked hard.

He found a cowherd who was good at keeping cows and worked very hard.

When the cowherd Altair met the weaver Vega, he thought he had never met such a beautiful girl in his life.

Vega also thought what a handsome young man he was.

In a nutshell, they fell in love with each other at first sight.

Soon they started their married life.

They did nothing but enjoyed their sweet life at home:

Vega lost her interest in weaving, so she didn't sit at her loom anymore;

Altair didn't work on the field or feed his cow either.

God, their father, thought it seriously wrong and warned them to do their work as they had done.

But they ignored his warning.

Their behavior invited God's anger.

A river made from stars was placed between Altair and Vega.

The river, Milky Way, was becoming wider and wider.

At last they couldn't see each other's shape any more.

However loudly they shouted, it was impossible to hear each other's voice.

That was the divine retribution against them.

She sat at her loom so that she could forget him, but she couldn't weave any more because her eyes filled with tears.

On the other hand he was so absent minded day and night that he didn't go to the fields to work.

His cows became thinner and thinner and the fields got worse and worse.

God felt pity and anxious about them.

One day he said to the couple who was crying and wishing to meet again, staying still on both side of the Milky Way.

"My daughter, providing you weave at a loom again, I'll permit you to meet him. Can you swear to do that?"

"Yes, of course. If I could meet him again, I'll do anything you'd tell me to," she swore the God.

"My son-in-law, providing you work in the fields again, I'll permit you to meet her again. Can you swear to do that?"

"Yes, I can. If I could meet her, I'll do anything you'd tell me to," he swore the God.

"So you can meet each other here on the night of the 7th of July every year," God said to them.

That night, the separated couple was out by the Milky Way, staring at the opposite side of the river shore, when a flock of magpies flew over and made a bridge with their wings until the couple could meet again over the Milky Way.

How happy they were when they met again for the first time in a year!

That's how they can meet each other once a year.

This story originally came from a Chinese legend.

The story about these two stars was already written in the book of three thousand years ago.

They say that even in Japan there was a custom that we enshrined Orihime as a Goddess of sewing or fabrics and women purified themselves.

The Tanabata Festival seems to have been born in the mixture of Chinese legend and Japanese custom.

The Star Festival has been celebrated in Japan on the night of the 7th of July.

People, especially school children, write their wishes on slips of colored paper and attach them to branches of bamboos, and place them outside of their houses.

Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture and Hiratsuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture are famous for their Star Festival display along the main streets, and millions of visitors enjoy walking through the decorated streets.

We wish on the stars that Orihime and Hikoboshi can meet this year too, once a year.
